Rift Planes of Telera Review

February 22nd, 2011

Billed as a premium, next generation mmo that contains everything a gamer expects to find in a top-quality fantasy game.

I would agree with that sentence as long as a gamer doesn’t expect anything resembling originality.

Start with basic classes, then divide them up further a bit for some pretense of customization, add the obligatory “good” side vs. “bad” side to give some pretext for vitriolic pvp, and there ya have it in a nut shell.

Very standard UI, easily understood by most current MMO players

I didn’t dislike the game, i just felt that i had played it before. It gives most of the WoW-crowd the items they are expecting (green for common items, blues for rares etc), your typical go to quest guy, do something that he wants for a few bucks or a upgraded item. They added Warhammer’s Public Quests idea into the mix and called them Rifts (but they function the same). There is the mandatory crafting elements, dig up rocks, make armor etc. They also took a page out of a popular Free to play game called Runes of Magic. They allow you to take powers from other classes at certain points to further develop your player. But this is a very slippery slope. Cookie Cutter builds for character types are inevitable in these types of games because game developers typically put in so many mediocre abilities that players will constantly gravitate towards what is most useful.

While it is interesting to allow the mix of abilities in the game, its a simple truism that if you let EVERYONE pick a heal spell, they will. Because healing in these games tend to be over-powered especially while leveling. It can allow you to take on quests/monsters that you wouldn’t normally be able to fight alone.

One thing that really stuck in my craw about Rift, was the instance known as Deadmines. Now creating a instance in a mine and filling it with the undead is ok i suppose, calling it DEADMINES (one of the first and most popular dungeons in World of Warcraft) is another. It would be like Burger King selling Big Macs, just seems silly.

Dead guy? Check! Mine? Check! Screw it.. Deadmines it is!

Another thing that i disliked about Rift is the starting areas. . There are 2 starting areas, one for each of the opposing sides. When game companies choose to go this route, i feel the really neglect the replay value of their game. I think after a certain level, players are willing to redo content, its pretty much expected, but they shouldn’t have to redo ALL the exact same content when they wish to try a different skill class.

The instanced PVP (warfronts) are pretty fun. Good pacing to the pvp combat and but the “everyone can eventually heal” issue could jeopardize this.

The MMO gamespace is so horribly saturated with “High-Fantasy” style games, one simply has to play one to have a good idea of what to do in any of them. If you are going to play one, i wouldn’t suggest Rift as the one to play. I WOULD suggest rift to players that love warcraft and want a highly similar game to fool around with. Leveling is quite rapid so that buying the game and playing for a month or 2 would definitely allow you to see all the content if you do choose to give it a whirl.

Graphics aren’t bad.. But I dont think i would consider it next-generation.

Sadly, as the initial plan is for rift to be a Pay to Play game, i cannot forsee it lasting the year. Given the competition that is coming (guild wars 2, star wars, etc) they will be hard pressed to maintain a fanbase large enough for them to keep adding content and to grow Rift into something more unique.

Bottom line:  Flip a Coin, Heads don’t get it.  Tails don’t get it.  If the coin lands on its side, give it a try.

Ya know, I grew up on the Transformers.  Optimus Prime was one of my idols.  And even with that in mind, I cannot recommend getting this game.  It’s not a terrible game per se, but it’s not good either.

You start the game playing through the Decepticon campaign, playing most of the time as Megatron, you run around doing uninspired things in a fairly uninspired story.  Pick up a few weapons, shoot a few Autobots (that don’t look all that different from the scenery sadly) and take over the world.
